If you are looking for a costume to really accentuate your hips, look no further. Worn squarely on the hips, the Oviri Tahitian dance costume is one of Pola's signature styles of costume. It includes the hipband (hatua), feathered cape (tahei), and headband (hei).
With shells, cock feathers, and lauhala creating an ornate wide hipband, attention is drawn to the motion of the dancers' hips. A contrasting full length hau skirt covering the back half of the dancer from hip to hip adds to the authentic look and amplifies the motion.
A velcro matching headband is made featuring mother-of-pearl shells, fabric, feathers and a plume of niau blanc.
The feathered cape (tahei) is a striking addition to the costume. Anciently, the feathered cape was not used in dancing costumes, mostly because of the practicalities. This modern version is much lighter than the traditionally hot and heavy ancient versions.
Creative customizations are also possible. Just let us know what you'd like and Pola will work it out.
